King Sebastian I of Portugal was born on January 20, 1554 and ascended to the throne at the age of three in 1557. He was the son of Prince John of Portugal and Joanna of Austria. During his reign, Portugal experienced a period of relative peace and prosperity, and King Sebastian became known for his piety and devotion to the Catholic Church.
One of King Sebastian's most famous acts was his decision to embark on a crusade to North Africa in 1578. Despite the objections of his advisers and the Church, Sebastian was committed to the idea of reclaiming the Islamic territories that had been taken by the Ottoman Empire. He commanded the expedition himself, but it ended in disaster at the Battle of Alcácer Quibir, where the Portuguese army was completely defeated. King Sebastian himself was killed in the battle, although his body was never identified.
Despite his short reign and his ill-fated expedition, King Sebastian remains a significant figure in Portuguese history and culture. Legends and myths have grown up around his life and death, and he is often remembered as a symbol of Portugal's imperial ambitions and national identity.
